Noorkishili Nakero Naing’isa is a powerful voice from the heart of Ngorongoro. A leader among the Maa people in Ololosokwan village, she has risen to national and international attention as one of the women standing firm against the forced evictions and violent persecution of the Maasai community in Tanzania.
Though she did not receive formal education, Noorkishili has an unshakable understanding of justice, leadership and people power. She speaks plainly and speaks out, even when it is dangerous to do so.
Her Roots and Rise
1. Growing up
Noorkishili grew up in a traditional Maasai setting where girls rarely got a chance to go to school. Her early education was disrupted by cultural norms and poverty.
Despite these limitations, she grew up alert to the injustices around her, especially against women, children and her community. She started attending local village meetings and over time, became known for her ability to mediate, speak up and intervene in crises. She found her place among her people not as a politician, but as someone they could trust.
2. The Fight for Land and Dignity
For decades, Noorkishili has been at the center of land rights resistance in Ngorongoro. The Maasai community has faced government pressure to vacate areas like Loliondo and Ololosokwan, despite living there for generations.
On June 10, 2022, Tanzanian security forces violently evicted villagers, sparking chaos and trauma. Mothers ran with their children into the bush. Others were shot. The state branded them as “Kenyans” to justify the eviction, but Noorkishili pushed back and fought for their land.
3. Advocacy Beyond Borders
In 2023, Noorkishili and a delegation of Maasai women traveled to the European Parliament to testify about the violence. Their stories shook many, though they are still waiting for real change.
After their visit, in December 2023, the European Parliament passed a resolution condemning the evictions. And by mid-2024, the EU Commission cut Tanzania from a major conservation grant, a sign that global attention was starting to shift.
4. Day-to-Day Resistance
Noorkishili has been arrested, harassed and surveilled for speaking out. Still, she leads lawsuits, attends community meetings, and helps women fight for justice even with limited resources.
She has helped challenge state actions in court, including the illegal seizure of cattle and denial of access to traditional grazing lands. In one case, the court ruled that the so-called “Game Controlled Area” was invalid. a win for the community, but days later, government agents seized livestock in violation of the same ruling.
5. Voice of the Women
Noorkishili has become a symbol of women’s leadership in the Maasai resistance. She has helped women organize protests, speak to the press and defend youth and elders in court.
